Start with one heat-use task
Choose a production line, cleaning-water loop or drying task. Record what it needs and which existing supply serves it. A whole-site fuel bill may cover several uses; it cannot establish the recoverable heat or replacement share for one project.
Bring these records
- Supply: own boiler or purchased steam; fuel or contract price, units and billing period.
- Demand: end use, required temperature, steam state where relevant, and load or consumption records.
- Timing: production, cleaning, shutdown and seasonal schedules.
- Boundary: meters and equipment covered by the bill; other uses that must be separated.
- Existing recovery and any proposed waste-heat source: location, temperature, flow and availability.
Keep unknowns blank. Record the source and date of each value. Steam mass alone does not define useful heat; its state and the return/discharge boundary also matter.
Check the system before choosing equipment
The US Department of Energy groups steam guidance around generation, distribution, heat recovery and end use, including insulation, steam traps and condensate return. These are topics for a competent site review, not instructions to change pressure, combustion or safety settings yourself.
Heat recovery or a heat pump may be one direction to assess after the demand and source are understood. This site does not perform a complete boiler or steam-network diagnosis from a bill.
Choose the next step
If the boundary is unclear, mark meters and heat users on a simple sketch and assign the missing measurements. If source and demand information is available, read the economic screening guide. Sources and limits
