BASF Ludwigshafen: CompriVAP open heat pump, up to 50 MW of process steam, not yet operating
Public project note: BASF has started construction at Ludwigshafen, Germany, of an open heat-pump system (GKT CompriVAP, formerly GIG Karasek) meant to turn steam-cracker waste heat into up to 50 MW of process steam. Commissioning is scheduled for mid-2027. This entry is under construction, not an operating case.

- Open CompriVAP heat pump — a different route from the closed heat pump plus MVR used at the delfort paper mill
- Result status
- Construction has started. The public note schedules commissioning for mid-2027. The 50 MW figure is a planned maximum, not a measured duty.
- Key risk
- Do not cite 50 MW or 100,000 t/a as operating performance. Schedule slip, steam conditions, and COP are unpublished.
- Existing system
- Steam cracker at Ludwigshafen with waste heat that is planned to feed process steam; fossil steam remains until the heat pump is commissioned
- Refrigerant
- Open heat-pump / vapor-compression arrangement under the CompriVAP name; fluid not restated here beyond the vendor's open-cycle description

- Annual savings
- Source claim, for a plant that is not yet operating: about 100,000 t/a of emissions avoided

项目背景
BASF marked the start of construction at Ludwigshafen for a large industrial heat pump supplied by GKT (formerly GIG Karasek) using the CompriVAP system. A 2026 innovation-award note repeats the same project. Because the unit is not operating, the library tags it as under construction as well as process steam.
叙述性输入
Planned sink: up to 50 MW of process steam from cracker waste heat. Source temperature, steam pressure, COP, and operating hours are not in the note used here.
热泵方案
An open heat pump (CompriVAP) is planned to upgrade cracker waste heat into process steam. GKT is the EPC for planning, supply, and implementation. This is not the closed isobutane heat pump plus MVR architecture published for delfort.
COP 与节能
No operating COP or measured steam flow exists yet. The public figures are a planned maximum of 50 MW and an emissions estimate of about 100,000 t/a.
投资回报要点
Investment and payback are not in the note used here. Any savings figure applies only after the mid-2027 commissioning target.
